The Salmon Luke me-feed-me™ collection

We’re passionate about helping children learn to feed by themselves, so we’re delighted you want to find out more about our products. There’s lots of information here on our website, about helping your toddler to eat, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for please contact us. We will be only too glad to answer any questions you may have about our me-feed-me collection.

Self-feeding toddlers: mess, fuss and frustration all round

At the age of around 9 months of age most children start to become interested in feeding themselves. At first it’s finger food and as they become older they start to experiment with cutlery.

This transition to bowls and cutlery is a frustrating time for toddlers, as their motor coordination is not yet fully developed and their attention span is pretty short. They have the desire to self-feed but don’t necessarily have the ability to do it. Result? Hungry, frustrated toddler, lots of mess and stressful mealtimes.

What is the Salmon Luke me-feed-me™ collection?

The me-feed-me collection from Salmon Luke is the result of a three year study into an infant’s self-feeding development. We started with clean sheet of paper and studied in great detail the exact problems young children experience when learning to self-feed. We looked at how they sit, the movements of their arms, how they grip, how they interact with traditional children’s dinnerware and equally as important, the mood they’re in.

The result of this research is the me-feed-me bowl and cutlery set. Every detail of our products has been designed to help your child self-feed with confidence. We have had to overcome many technical difficulties to bring you this dinnerware, as we have refused to compromise on the optimum design needed to help children self-feed. You can learn more about the design details in our ‘detailed information’ pages, found at the top of this page.

What age group is me-feed-me™ designed for?

The self-sterilising properties of our dinnerware mean that it’s ideal for young infants starting out on finger food when surface hygiene is important. They will really start to experience the benefit once they progress to using cutlery at around 12+ months.

Children at 3 and 4 who have not exclusively moved onto porcelain crockery will enjoy using our dinnerware as it’s just so much easier and there’s less-mess for parents to clear up too. At this age your child will probably want to use metal cutlery. That’s fine, you can use most metal cutlery with our bowl. Spoons with a rounded head work best, and we offer a bowl only option in our shop for just that occasion.

What’s Hygienik™?

Salmon Luke's products are the only ones to be made from Hygienik™ a material which gives our dinnerware self-sterilising properties and has been independently tested to stop the growth of illness-causing bacteria such as MRSA, E. coli and salmonella.

The majority of dinnerware for young children is made from plastic, a material which is easily scratched. It's common for micro-organisms, like bacteria, to live and multiply within these microscopic grooves. If these organisms replicate to large enough numbers, they can cause stomach upsets or even more serious illness.

Hygienik™ has been tested by an independent laboratory to be effective in inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus, which can cause deterioration, unpleasant odour and discoloration on the surface of ordinary plastic dinnerware.

Even repeated washing, scrubbing or scratching does not affect Hygienik's™ bacteria fighting performance.
